Angiodema...

Simple explanation for Angiodema from one of the websites is as follows:

"Angiodema is a swelling in the deep layers of the skin and can be accompanied by hives. The condition is temporary, but can cause discomfort and self-consciousness due to the appearance.

Angiodema is found most often in soft tissues, such as on the face, hands, eyelids, mouth, lips, tongue, feet and genitals. The swelling is not red or itchy, but can be painful due to a burning, raised swelling. If the swelling occurs in the throat or mouth it can stop breathing and may be life-threatening at this stage.

Angiodema can appear together with hives, but there are also times when it appears on its own. Like hives, angiodema can be acute or chronic, with acute angiodema lasting for a short times, such as a few minutes to a few days. Chronic andiodema can last for a much longer period of time and be much more difficult to diagnose an obvious cause.

Treatment for angiodema is similar to hives, where the cause of the swelling is identified and avoided or teated with medication. "

My mum has been a silent sufferer for many years now. Her face swells up in minutes without reason... or any that we were aware of. All tests were negative.

Last week was one of profound terror for both me and my dad. My mum nearly suffocated to death while we were at work. I wasn't informed of the events until I reached home in the night but according to my Dad mum experienced a slight tingling on her tongue and within 10 minutes the tongue had swelled to encompass her entire mouth. Luckily she had texted Dad to get home asap which he did coz she was not able vocalize anything after 10 minutes. I can almost imagine the terrifying thoughts that raced through my Dads head. (In my earlier posts I had written about my mum and dad) After having anti-allergy injection ma was sent home. The swelling went down after 24 hours and during that time we were praying that it doesn't extend to the throat which would have been fatal indeed.

Right now we are closely monitoring her without trying to freak her out. Its sort of hard to be concerned without trying to show the concern :) Coz in ma's case one of the reasons for the facial swelling is stress and the tongue swelling (after research and alot of medical opinions was due to aspirin allergy (we hope))... So we are trying to make life as much stress free as possible.. Which is abit hard right now...

But I am glad to report that she is doing ok now. And I am keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way!!!
